On Thoughts to be Developed Later

With our firm foundation on the Declaration of Independence, we here in America tend to set freedom as our highest virtue.
Sometimes I wonder if this is entirely a good thing.

I often question the value of judging, on a national level, morality based on the authority of two documents (The Declaration and the Constitution) written more than 230 years ago by good but fallible men. Would it not be better to commit to a continuous quest for truth, rather than allow it to be limited by two documents?
